CATAS expert group headed by Dr. Liu Guodao went to the Federated States of Micronesia three times respectively in 2017, 2018 and 2019 for a total of 51 days. They found that nearly 60% of the vegetation on the main islands of Yap, Chuuk, Kosrae and Pohnpei was damaged by the Convolvulaceae plantMerremia peltata. The damage mode ofMerremia peltatais to make use of its strong propagation and growth adaptability. After invading, it grows rapidly and covers tightly on the top canopy of the damaged objects, and kills the low-level vegetation covered by it through predatory competition for light and soil nutrients. CATAS experts suggested the Federated States of Micronesia to carry out prevention and control of the harmful plants immediately, and the surrounding countries should also strengthen the early warning and prevention ofMerremia peltata.
