On November 15th,2023,the Sub-forumonS&T Innovation Cooperation of the Second Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Agriculture was held in Sanya, China. Cui Pengwei,Secretary of the CPC Leadership Groupof Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS), and Felix Dapare Dakora, Former President of the African Academy of Sciences and Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered speeches. Xie Jianghui, Vice President of CATAS, announced the launch of the "Africa's Cassava Production Amplification Initiative", and debuted CATAS’s latest series of books, including "China's Main Technical Standards for Cassava, Banana and Rubber" (English, French and Spanish versions), "China's Main Technical Standards for Coffee, Cashew, Cocoa and Vanilla" (English and French versions).
Underthe"Africa's Cassava Production Amplification Initiative",CATAS expects toimplement five major programs, including cassava breeding localization, seed substitution, seed management improvement, post-harvest loss reduction and comprehensive utilization, and agricultural mechanization in Africa’s major cassava producing countries; andaims to plantmore than 500,000 hectares of new cassava varietieswhile demonstratingnew technologiesin Africa,in an effort todoublethe average yield to more than 17.00 tonsper hectare,thusenhancingAfrica's food security capabilities, anddrivingthe development of modern agriculture in Africa.
The event has attracted 20 African government officials and ambassadors to China from 17 African countries, as well as representatives from international organizations such as the African Union, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and domestic and foreign agricultural science and education enterprises, totaling 120 to discuss China-Africa Agricultural S&T innovation cooperation.
